I grew up in the South hearing the old folks start an earnest avowal with the phrase, "So help me, Miz Agnes!" I've borrowed the beginning of that phrase for the avowal and for the other meaning it has: "So, help me with this..." , which can also be used interchangeably with the American slang phrase, "So, let me get this straight." Here are things to swear over, things to avow, smarty aleck rhetorical questions, and all manner of you-gotta-be-kidding-me items. These posts started out to be about S. Carolina, land of smarty alecks and meaningless avowals; now the page has expanded to include WTF's, in general.
