Yes, a post-literate culture depends more on visual forms of communication, less on the written word. Its members can of course read, but prefer to hear and see information presented. Hence the huge popularity of people like Limbaugh and Beck. And because reading is fundamental to developing the ability to think critically, such people are much more susceptible to demagogues. That's why you see people at tea party meetings who have obviously known true hard times, but who are protesting initiatives and leaders that arguably would do them more good than any other group.

Nance, your voice is so refreshingingly thoughtful and rational. I fight against being caught up in an "eye for an eye" philosophy when it comes to counterbalancing the rhetoric of the tea party movement. You remind me of why it is important that we not succumb to being purveyors of meaningless vitrolic interchanges and instead ocus on charting a course through our current wasteland. I am so in accord with your assessment of the necessity of the banking industry bailouts; it wasn't about saving the banks; it was about saving the country. Very well said my riend.

“Obama must believe he has such support, if he is to find the will to fight on in our behalf.” I doubt the increasing lack of support is going to affect his will to create progress or fight on our behalf; he had that will going in; more than half are fighting against him now or at least questioning his administration; just one example of silly stuff: questioning his birth certificate, for God’s sake and thank God, I hope that is over.

I’ll bet he’s smart enough to have considered the possibility of push-back long before he decided to run; although it still astounds me at the astronomical efforts the Right has made against him this last year.

To Drinksbeforedinner: I looked up the definition of “post-literate”; apparently it does not mean illiterate or pre-literate (figure that one out) but simply according to Wikipedia (poo-poo that source if you like): “A postliterate society is a hypothetical society wherein multimedia technology has advanced to the point where literacy, the ability to read written words, is no longer necessary”.

I would hesitate to assume and/or consider this “tribal society” is lacking in experience of hard times. There are plenty of folks that can read written words on their PCs, I-pods, etc. and written words are not always to be viewed as fact, as you well know. Reading from a bound book does not necessarily ensure an appreciation of hard times. Cheers - Vino Bella - I love a vino b4 and during dining.

You are a wonderful, wise and thoughtful woman. And you are SMART! Have to find the program and watch it -- but you are so right: we must be vigilant in our support of the President's effort to fix our health care system and reset our financial system.

THANK YOU for coming down on the side of rationality and intelligence instead of following blindly the ranting left which cannot seem to understand that, in this economy, it's not GM but the "too big to fail banks" which fill in the blanks on "As *** goes, so goes the economy."

I can only echo Zo: how sane, rational, hopeful and mature.Thank you. People who don't read--that is, people who are part of post-literate tribal society (read:tea party attendees)--can be assumed to know little or no history. When such people grow up in the atmosphere of post-WW2 abundance, with little or no experience of hard times (not, obviously, including those for whom life has always been a matter of hard times), you can expect--well, what we've got.

I think there are still many reasons for hope, and I agree that I hope that our grassroot efforts to combat the tea baggers must be civil and compassonite, even to them, but to clearly call attention to those who need help. Sorry that you could not recoup your losses.
